Project TREBLE (COMPLETED)

Testing Resilience in an Ensemble-Based Learning Environment (Project TREBLE) was a 3-year longitudinal study funded (FIU800003479) by the Ware Foundation. The purpose of the study was to examine how participation in the Miami Music Project (MMP – an El Sistema inspired program) impacted the lives of youth in a multifaceted manner. Recruitment targeted MMP students (ages 8-17),their parents, as well as their MMP music instructors. The study followed these families over the course of a year and examine how the youth and their parents were impacted as a result of their involvement in MMP. This project involved collaboration between state-of–the-science researchers and state-of-the-art music educators. The main community collaborator— the Miami Music Project – was founded by world-renowned conductor James Judd. The MMP program provides free music education to Miami youth, following the El Sistema-philosophy. The primary aim of this study was to examine the impact of participation in the MMP program on factors associated with positive youth development (PYD), namely Competence, Character, Confidence, Connection, and Caring. The study also examined the impact of participation on anxiety, impulsive behavior and skills associated with executive functioning. Findings from this study have been presented at various national conferences.
